Our Programs

Keeping Families Together Through Empowerment and Education

R2T defines empowerment as increasing the spiritual, political, social, educational, gender, and economic strength of individuals and communities. The challenges facing the community are complex, subsequently; it will take time to see significant quantitative results. However, we expect to see an increase in personal empowerment which will lead to increased employment, business success and income, which will eventually improve living situations for children, their families and the community at large.

We believe success also lies in the individual stories of our participants. We have experienced grandmothers learning to spell their name in English for the first time in their life, parents able to finally help their children do school work, women building confidence to seek and gain employment, and entrepreneurs equipped with tools to start their own businesses.

Please visit our Testimonials page to hear from our students and teachers themselves, the impact our programs have had on their lives and the community.

Right 2 Thrive’s programs are free and family focused. We work with the entire community the child is immersed in to build programs based on personal empowerment, emotional intelligence skills training, and workforce readiness. Our goal is to help residents increase the likelihood that they will have the financial means to send their children to school, keep their family unit together, improve their overall health and wellbeing, lift themselves out of poverty, and assist in the economic development of their community.

Youth Empowerment Program (YEP!)

We teach life skills, sports, art & music to over 300 youth at our partner organization, Bigent Education Centre. We also work with young adults to help them embrace their self-worth and provide them with vital life skills and training.

Education Scholarship Program

More than 50% of adults in Dagoretti are unemployed and unable to pay school fees; for this and other reasons 30% of primary students are unable to attend secondary school. Furthermore, 70% of those who do attend are unable to finish.

We connect at-risk youth with the educational opportunities they need to break this cycle of generational poverty. Equally as important, R2T offers these students the emotional support necessary for them to succeed through life skills training and one-on-one mentoring . We act as a point of contact for the school administrators and meet with teachers on a regular basis. We guide and mentor our scholarship students as they work to achieve success. We create a trusting and safe environment and ensure that they build meaningful and healthy relationships with caring adults.

Our scholarship students:

• receive quality, consistent and uninterrupted schooling

• sustain competitive grades

• develop necessary basic life and interpersonal skills

• receive recognition for good conduct by teachers and administrators

• are prepared for university and/or workforce both emotionally and academically

Quinter Kimaiywa has a great story about how education has changed her life. Please listen and consider donating to our Education Scholarship Program. For 1 student, it costs $300 for one year of Primary School, $2000 for one year of Secondary School, and $2500 for one year of University

After School Youth Empowerment Program @ Bignet

Coaching 2.jpeg

Bignet is an informal school in Nairobi that maintains small class sizes so teachers can know their students and effectively meet their needs.

Right 2 Thrive conducts an after school Youth Empowerment Program that teaches life skills and utilizes holistic trauma healing modalities to strengthen the resilience and focus of young students.

In addition to trauma healing, R2T uses emotional intelligence skills to help young students develop an awareness of their emotions and learn to manage them in a healthy way.

Economic Empowerment Program (EEP)

The EE Program helps men and women embrace their self-worthiness and provides them with vital business skills and training.

A large number of men and women in Dagoretti lack formal education, self-confidence, and business skills needed to earn an income and meet their family’s basic needs. Additionally, women in Dagoretti are often single mothers, uneducated, unemployed, and refugees living in severe poverty. They lack the ability to save or borrow the minimum funds necessary to open, operate and maintain businesses.

Provide business skills to men and women through a 4-week education series that includes personal empowerment, business planning, financial recordkeeping, customer service, product pricing, inventory tracking, marketing and branding.

Introduced in 2015, CapStart offers capital investment and support to graduates of our Economic Empowerment Program to start and improve their businesses. We carefully evaluate each business and invest where there is the greatest potential for growth and job creation. Rather than having the recipients repay a loan, we have a pay-it-forward policy that requires them to give away goods or services equal to the investment.

•Since 2012, over 2,000 women registrants have taken our empowerment and business classes

•5 women have started their own businesses through our CapStart Program

The Kustawi Ladies have sold over $8,000 worth of projects in the USA since forming their own Self-Help Group under the guidance of Right 2 Thrive. Learn more about the Kustawi Project.

  • In January 2018, R2T will offer economic empowerment to both men and women equally..

“I’ve learned things that have improved my business like how to handle customers and record keeping. It has even improved my income so that I can be able to feed my family.”—Doricas

Evaluation Methods

Statistics are certainly vital for evaluating the efficiency and success of our programs. Because we believe in the importance of recognizing and celebrating the individual participant's success, we collect both quantitative and qulitative data. Our evaluation methods include:

Student Surveys

We conduct students surveys at the start, mid-term and at the end of each semester.

Teacher Evaluations

We evaluate teachers at the mid-term and at the end of the semester.

Students provide written or video testimonials where they share their feelings on the classes and any successes they have experienced as a result.

Student/Teacher Meetings

Teachers meet with students one-on-one throughout the semester to discuss their progress and to outline goals.

"When I joined Right 2 Thrive in August 2012 as a personal empowerment student, I was idle and had no self-esteem. I used to be so shy but never again will I be afraid of anything. I am strong now."-Christine
